Running, jumping and mining will all reduce your hunger. You can get food by picking up apples that fall from trees or hunting down small animals before you venture deep into caves. Don't try to build a castle in the first few nights. Just dig a small cave into a cliffside or build a simple 3x3 dirt box with a door to hide from monsters and stay alive.
